Birthday Special: From Maachis to Fitoor; here are the top performances by talented Tabu

Tabu is celebrating her birthday today. The tall beauty who is known for her character roles in the film industry has turned 44 today. Tabassum Hashmi, which is her real name has not only made her mark in Bollywood but also went on to work in films of different languages like English, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali. The talented actor has been bestowed with National Film Awards twice for her performances in Maachis and Chandni Bar.

Today on the occasion of her birthday, let's take a look at some of her incredible performances.

Maachis

This Gulzar directorial was based on Sikh insurgency in Punjab during the 1980s. Tabu played the role of Virender Kaur aka Veeran and went on to give her performance of a lifetime in this 1996 release.

Virasat

In this Anil Kapoor starrer film, Tabu was seen playing Gehna, who gets married to him under unavoidable circumstances. She plays a village simpleton, and her work in the film is totally commendable. She went on to win Best Actress (Critics) Filmfare Awards.

Hu Tu Tu

In another Gulzar directorial, Tabu played Panna Barve, daughter of a Chief Minister, who gets kidnapped by her ex-lover and friend played by Suniel Shetty and Nana Patekar respectively. The actor sported a short hairdo in some sequences of the film, which gave the feel of an urban girl.

Astitva

Astitva is one of the best women-centric movies made in the industry. This bilingual Marathi/Hindi film was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and talked about an illegitimate child born out of love by Tabu with Mohnish Behl who played the role of her music teacher. The movie went on to win National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi in 2000 and Tabu was awarded Filmfare Best Actress (Critics).

Chandni Bar

Madhur Bhandarkar is known for making women-centric films in different fields they work. Chandni Bar was based on the life and times of dance bar girls who get associated with Mumbai underworld. For her unmissable performance, Tabu won the Best Actress National Film Award in the year 2002.

Cheeni Kum

Tabu played a 34-year-old love interest of Amitabh Bachchan, who was seen playing a 64-year-old chef in London. Her role as a strong independent woman, who is adamant to marry Big B despite big age difference was applauded by the audience.

Haider

Shahid Kapoor gave one of the best performances of his lifetime with this film. His mother's role was played by Tabu and oh my, she was outstanding as Ghazala Meer. Her role was based on Gertrude from Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet.

Fitoor

Coming to her latest performance, based on Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Tabu was seen as Katrina Kaif's mother in this Abhishek Kapoor directorial. Miss Havisham from the book, Tabu played the role of Begum Hazrat Jaan, a woman who was defeated in love and was depressed for her whole life. Her possessive nature towards her daughter blended with negativity nailed the perfect performance by Tabu.
