Said to be one of the liveliest times of the year, Durga Puja is a festival Bengalis take pride in celebrating. But even non-Bengalis fall in love with the zeal and the avidity around those few days. Though any Bengali household might be the ideal place to be during Pujo, there are a few Bollywood films that take the spirit of Pujas to every household.

Time and again, filmmakers have attempted to capture the essence of the brio and zingy spirit of the colorful festival but only a few could leave a mark.

Here are 5 films that embrace the festive spirit of Durga Puja in the right mode!

1.       Devdas (2002)

The vivaciousness Sanjay Leela Bhansali brought to this classic tale is a delight to see. The whole Dola Re sequence made it higher in spirits.  Quick fact: Chandramukhi and Paro never meet in the novel, but Bhansali made a few tweaks of his own resulting in the colorful number!

2.       Parineeta (2005)

Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel by the same name, this Pradeep Sarkar film showed not only Bengali culture but also the fervor around the festival. The film also brought to the tinselville powerhouse Vidya Balan.

3.        Kahaani (2012)

Seeing Kolkata through Sujoy Ghosh’s eye is what makes this film high on cinematic value. But the highlight of the film was the Pujo celebration. The film’s climax engulfed in the vigor of the festival was sheer beauty.

4.       Vicky Donor (2012)

Even though the Durga Puja scenes weren’t that long, in the short take Shoojit Sircar summed up the pandal-hopping-clicking-a-selfie phenomenon in it.

5.       Gunday (2014)

The Durga Puja sequence was re-created in Kolkata especially for the shoot of the song Tune Maari Entriyaan. All fun and frolic, it depicted an exuberant celebration.

Feeling the zing yet?

Happy Durga Puja!
