Kwon Do Woon OPENS UP about homosexuality; Wants to ‘open doors for others in the industry to come out’
Kwon Do Woon recently opened up about being a homosexual through Instagram, and spoke up on issues and rights of sexual minorities.
Trot singer Kwon Do Woon has revealed that he is a homosexual and shared his plans to release music about a gay relationship! On October 6, the singer shared through his agency that he had decided to come out. “I wanted to speak for the rights of sexual minorities and open the door for others in the entertainment industry to come out,” he said. Kwon Do Woon is the first Trot Korean singer to publicly come out.
On October 6, Kwon Do Woon posted on Instagram to share an article about his coming out and he wrote, “I’ve been very surprised to see all the articles since this morning. I’ll work harder. Thank you for your support.” While addressing fans, Kwon Do Woon said that anyone from LGBTQ community, who is dreaming of becoming a singer, “I want to become someone that you can feel a sense of kinship with and give you strength.”
The singer also revealed that he’ll be releasing a new full album on October 30. “It’s my eighth album, and the title track is a gay trot remake of Chae Yeon’s Two of Us.” He explained, “It’s a dance trot song about a man seducing a man. It will be something new and fresh.”
In case you didn't know, Kwon Do Woon is a trot singer-songwriter who entered the industry in 2009 when he won the Grand Prize and Best Lyricist and Best Composer awards at the tbs College Trot Song Festival. At the time, he was studying journalism at Sogang University. He went on to debut in 2010 through his first album One More Glass, It’s My Style (literal title), which was released under his real name Kwon Hyuk Min. In 2011, he promoted the dance trot song Tonight under the stage name Kwonstin. He recently released a remake of singer Jang Yoon Jung’s Latin dance trot song Casanova, and this year is his 10th debut anniversary.
